Questionable Advice

If there's one thing I've learned while lurking in the webcomic world, it's that punchlines are optional. Because webcomics have archives users can freely browse, it's a simple matter for strips to act as connective tissue in a larger narrative. If anything, forcing a punchline at the end of every strip when aiming for such a narrative might actually hurt the flow of the story.

That's not to say strips shouldn't have punchlines. Everyone is going to have their own interpretation of what is and isn't humor, though many people agree there's a certain structure that jokes abide by.

Basically what I'm saying is that you probably shouldn't follow this strip's advice and force humor at all costs. Most authors want to try something more serious at some point or another, and the more emphasis they've placed on humor, the more jarring the tonal shift will be.
