I'm not sure why I ever tried to equate Alpha to the monotheistic western religious concept of a God. I guess for the same reason popular science focuses most of its arguments on this concept: it's the single most popular.

This is sensitive territory, and it delves into a debate that annotations really can't encompass. Suffice it to say I've always felt the "science versus religion" fight to be a little on the black and white side, and prefer a middle approach. My current conception for Alpha is that he/she/it is a cosmic entity, like Lovecraft's Cthulhu or Q from Star Trek, who was responsible for the Big Bang in some way but has no knowledge of how or why.

I think it's a safe assumption that there could be something like that in this giant universe of ours, and I'm not holding out bets for it being omnibenevolent.
