Point the way

Fun fact: when designing the scientific diagrams for the Pioneer Plaque, Carl Sagan expressed apprehension at the use of the arrow as a means of designating direction. He felt that the arrow as an icon was a specific byproduct of human evolution, and an alien culture with access to completely different evolutionary conditions and planetary conditions might have developed entirely different tools on the path to society, and therefore would have no concept of what the arrow could ever signify.
